Confirmation gifts: medals, chains and religious jewelry for boys or girls

Confirmation is usually prepared for between the ages of 11 and 17 depending on the diocese, sometimes even in adulthood. The jewelry given on that day stays with the confirmand for decades to come: it’s worth choosing a piece whose size, material and design match their age and real-life use, not just its price. A medal, chain or piece of silverware should be chosen based on three concrete criteria: diameter or weight, metal purity, and the legibility of any engraving on the back.

The confirmation medal: designs and diameters

Three designs come up most often for a Catholic confirmation: the dove of the Holy Spirit, a reminder of the sacrament received, a patron saint matching the confirmand’s first name (Saint Michael, Saint Theresa, Saint Christopher), or the Miraculous Medal, whose apparition to Catherine Labouré dates back to 1830 and whose shrine, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal on Rue du Bac in Paris, remains an active pilgrimage site. For a teenager or adult, a diameter of 18 to 22 mm stays legible without being oversized; below 16 mm, the details of the face or dove become hard to make out with the naked eye.

Gold, silver or vermeil: what the material changes

  • 18-carat yellow, white or rose gold (750/1000): resists oxidation, keeps its shine without special care, suited to daily wear over several decades.
  • Sterling silver 925: lighter to wear and less expensive weight for weight, but tarnishes on contact with air and needs regular cleaning.
  • Vermeil (925 silver coated with gold): looks close to gold at purchase, but the gold plating wears down over years of friction against skin or clothing.

The chain: link types and lengths for a teenager

A 20 mm medal in 18-carat gold already weighs 2 to 3 grams: the chain needs to be sturdy enough to bear that weight without stretching. The curb chain, with its soldered oval links, remains the sturdiest for daily wear; the box chain or figaro chain offer more flexibility but handle heavier weights less well. For a teenager, a length of 45 to 50 cm sits comfortably around the neck without letting the piece hang too low; below 42 cm, the chain will feel tight at the throat as the child grows.

Bracelet, cross and earrings to complete the gift

A curb bracelet engraved with the first name works as an alternative or complement to the medal, with the same gold/silver trade-off depending on intended use. A plain cross, with no design, suits a confirmand who prefers a discreet symbol rather than a devotional image: it can be worn alone on a thin chain or paired with a medal on a double-strand chain. Cross- or dove-motif earrings are aimed at girls who already wear pierced jewelry; check the clasp type (butterfly back or screw back) based on the wearer’s age and activity level.

Silverware and photo frames: the gift you don’t wear

An engraved cup, napkin ring or silver photo frame rounds out a confirmation gift when jewelry alone feels insufficient, or for a confirmand who doesn’t wear a chain. These pieces sit on a shelf or in a drawer: they last through the years without the wear and tear that comes with worn jewelry (oxidation from skin contact, snagging, loss). The napkin ring, often engraved with the first name and year, sometimes stays on the family table for a lifetime.

How to choose based on name, age and use

Three questions are enough to guide the choice. Does the confirmand already wear jewelry daily, or will this gift be their first? A teenager who never wears a chain will more readily accept a simple silver medal than an overly showy gold piece. Does the first name match an identifiable saint (Michael, Theresa, Christopher) rather than a generic design like the dove or the Miraculous Medal? Is an engraving planned: on the back of a medal, the available space is often no more than 3 to 4 lines of a few characters — plenty for a name and a date, but not for a full sentence.
