Choosing a women’s wedding band by shape and material

A wedding band is worn every day, often for several decades. This detail changes everything about the choice: it’s not an evening ring you take off when you get home, it’s an object that rubs against other rings, that comes into contact with water, soap, gardening gloves. The most common shape remains the classic band, a solid ring with a rounded profile that slides easily onto the finger. The half-round band, thinner on the underside and wider on top, lightens the feel when worn without losing visual presence. The ribbon-style band, flat and wide, draws a clean line that suits slender hands. The round wire band, the most discreet profile, is often chosen to complement an engagement ring already worn on the finger.

Yellow, white or rose 18 carat gold: what it changes when worn

18 carat gold is 750/1000 fine, meaning 75% pure gold alloyed with silver, copper or palladium depending on the desired shade. Yellow gold keeps its colour without surface treatment and develops a slight patina over the years, which is no issue at all for an object meant to age alongside its owner. White gold receives a rhodium plating that gives it its silvery shine: this coating wears down with daily friction and needs re-rhodium plating every two to four years depending on use. The width of a women’s wedding band generally ranges from 2 to 6 mm. The comfort-fit profile, with a slightly domed inner section, reduces friction against the skin and makes the ring easier to remove, a point worth checking especially for fingers that swell at the end of the day or in summer. Pairing the wedding band with a ring already worn

When an engagement ring already sits on the ring finger, the wedding band should be chosen to fit against it without forcing: a slim round wire band follows the contour of a claw-set solitaire, whereas a wide band may catch against the setting. Some women prefer a diamond-set wedding band that echoes the stone from the engagement ring on a smaller scale, for a cohesive stacked look rather than a plain band.

The inner face of a 3 mm wide band offers an engravable area of around 2 mm in height running the full circumference of the ring, ample space for a date in DD.MM.YYYY format or two short first names. Beyond eight to ten characters, the engraver has to reduce the letter size, which affects legibility ten or twenty years down the line.
