History – Miraculous medal – Virgin of the Poor
This 18k gold miraculous medal depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary standing, arms open and slightly extended downwards, in a gesture of welcome and grace. Luminous rays flow from her hands, symbolizing the graces Mary grants to those who ask for them. She is often depicted standing on a globe, crushing a serpent under her foot, an image of evil defeated.
All around the Virgin is the invocation: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee”.
The reverse of the medal features other Marian symbols: a large letter M surmounted by a cross, and below it the two Hearts: that of Jesus crowned with thorns and that of Mary pierced by a sword, surrounded by twelve stars.
