History – Sacred Heart and Crowned Virgin Scapular

The scapular, also called the “little habit,” finds its roots in the Carmelite tradition. Originally, it was a garment worn by monks of the Order of Carmel, composed of two pieces of fabric joined by cords. It symbolized a commitment to live in fidelity to Christ, following the example of the Virgin Mary. In the 13th century, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Simon and gave the scapular as a sign of protection and grace for the faithful. Later, in 1910, Pope Saint Pius X authorized the use of the metal scapular medal to replace the cloth scapular, in order to facilitate daily wear while maintaining its spiritual dimension. Worn close to the heart, the scapular medal recalls the protection and intercession of the Virgin Mary.
